PBS -Changing Seas Documentary

Open Blue was pleased to be featured in the upcoming episode of the PBS series “Changing Seas” which airs on June 21 and 22. Changing Seas is a public television series produced by WPBT2 in Miami, Florida. It’s available to view at www.changingseas.tv and on the PBS YouTube channel “Changing Seas TV”.

At Open Blue we are focused on feeding current and future generations in harmony with the ocean. This show provides a behind the scenes glimpse into our mariculture operations located 8 miles off the Caribbean coast of Panama. Using innovative submersible SeaStation technology with our partner InnovaSea we are transforming the idea about how fish are grown in deep water open ocean sites into practical reality.

Our collaboration with world class research institutions such as the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at University of Miami supports our emphasis on innovation.  As Dr Benetti, Professor & Director of Aquaculture puts it: “Science is behind everything we do”. At Open Blue we feel the same way.

We see the University of Miami, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch® Program, and many others as guides in our quest for sustainability. For example, growing a new species like cobia has required us to find innovative solutions to fish health and diet requirements. As we continue our work with Monterey Bay Aquarium we have worked hard to find innovative feed ingredients to lessen our reliance on fish meal and oil from wild caught fisheries. Seafood Watch has agreed to review the new information we have provided and evaluate its impact on our current ranking. We hope to have this done by September this year.

Open Blue is committed to responsible mariculture practices to meet the most stringent standards to satisfy its customers.  At the same time, the company is focused on achieving the highest standards of credible, validated assurance of sustainable farming practices and food safety excellence.  Open Blue has achieved Global Gap, Three Star BAP Best Aquaculture Practice, Friend of the Sea, BRC and ISO 9001 2015. Open Blue is committed to achieving the recently released cobia standards by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) this Fall 2017.

Open Blue is a pioneer and world’s leader in raising fish in the tropical open ocean. Open Blue Cobia are raised 8 miles offshore, in their native waters with high energy currents, far away from sensitive ecosystems. Our fish never see the same water twice and have plenty of room to grow in large, stress-free SeaStation enclosures.  The result for our Customers is a reliable, sustainable source of this delicious whitefish with high levels of Omega 3.  Open Blue Cobia is a fish native to the Caribbean, long prized for its exceptional taste, high nutrition and versatility in raw or cooked applications.
